Types of cordless Drills

Cordless Drills are primarily divided into three categories and what you buy will depend on your anticipated usage.

  • Heavy Duty

Heavy Duty drills usually come with ½”/13mm chuck and18 volt Brushless Motors and are the most powerful in the cordless drill range.

These drills have the capability to drill bigger holes and drive bigger screws than a lighter duty tool.

  • General Use

Usually come with ½”/13mm chuck and are available in 12 or 18volt and can either come with light duty brushless or brushed motors. These are suitable for light industrial or heavy home use.

  • Light Duty

These are available with 13mm or 10mm chucks and can come in various voltages ranging from 12 to 18 volt these are mainly suitable for small jobs around the house,

Cordless Drill Purchase Options

  • Skin ( bare / naked ) this is a tool supplied with no batteries or charger

  • Kit supplied with batteries ( Usually 2 ) and a charger

  • Also available in Combo kits, these contain 1 or more other tools  Eg: Impact driver Sabre saw etc.

Features to keep in mind

  • Chuck Size

Make sure the chuck is big enough to accommodate the drills you are wanting to use.

There are now a range of chargers available in most brands. Check you are getting a charger suitable for your needs. Options include Fast chargers, automotive ( 12v ) and Multi bay chargers.

Li-ion batteries have two important specifications, the voltage and the Amperage. The Amperage ( Amp hours AH ) indicates the duration of usage of the battery the higher the AH the longer the run time.

Higher Amperage batteries are generally heavier than lower amperage so it can be an advantage to have smaller batteries. Also Batteries over 6amp are considered to be dangerous goods and have restrictions on how they can be shipped.

  • Brushless Motor

Brushless motors  are lighter more powerful and more efficient than non brushless motors so it is an advantage to buy a tool with a brushless motor. However brushed motors are still widely used and for most tools are still suitable for heavy use.

  • Extra Features

Extra features would often include and on board light which would definitely be a great feature to have if you continuously have to work in poorly lit areas. Belt clips are also a handy feature.
